We are pleased to welcome Sunderland-born solicitor Alex Howarth to our growing Dispute Resolution team. Alex joins our six-strong department, led by Director and Head of Dispute Resolution Phil Moir, bringing experience across a broad range of contentious matters, including commercial litigation, insolvency-related disputes and property disputes. His appointment strengthens the specialist support we can offer to individuals, landlords and businesses across Sunderland and the wider North East.
Developing local legal talent
Alex graduated from Newcastle University before completing the Legal Practice Course at Northumbria University. He began his legal career as a clinical negligence paralegal before securing a training contract and qualifying as a solicitor in 2021. Since then, he has worked at law firms across the region, developing broad experience in dispute resolution matters involving both private individuals and commercial clients.

Practical advice focused on results
Alex’s work will primarily focus on dispute resolution, with a particular emphasis on insolvency disputes, commercial litigation and property-related conflicts. He will also support clients with landlord and tenant disputes as changes to renters’ rights continue to develop and landlords and businesses review their processes, agreements and documentation.
Alex believes clients increasingly require clear and commercially grounded advice, particularly in a challenging economic environment where recovering debts and enforcing contractual rights can become increasingly complex.
He added:
“Clients do not just want legal answers; they want practical solutions that help them move forward. Disputes can often become emotional or unnecessarily complicated, so my approach is to simplify the process, explain the available options clearly and remain focused on achieving the best possible outcome. Attention to detail and communication are essential, particularly when balancing commercial considerations with the individual needs of each client.”
Supporting Sunderland and the wider region
Away from his legal work, Alex is passionate about Sunderland’s cultural and sporting community. He is a lifelong Sunderland AFC season ticket holder and also enjoys cricket, running, cycling, Formula 1 and live music. Alex is particularly interested in how legal services can support Sunderland’s growing creative, sporting and digital industries, including music and esports.
