Understanding domestic abuse and your rights
Domestic abuse can take many forms, including physical violence, emotional abuse, coercive control, financial control or harassment. Legal protection is available, and the Court has the power to make orders to safeguard you and your children.
You may be able to apply for:
- Non-Molestation Orders to prevent harassment, threats or violence.
- Occupation Orders to regulate who can live in the family home.
These applications can often be made urgently and, in some circumstances, without the other party being notified in advance.
Legal Aid is often available for victims of domestic abuse, subject to eligibility.
You do not have to face this alone. Alongside legal advice, there are specialist local organisations that can provide emotional and practical support, including:
- Wearside Women in Need (WWIN) – offering support and refuge services for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
- Impact Family Services – providing domestic abuse support services across the North East.
If you are in immediate danger, you should always contact the police on 999.
